The Circle of Tentacles
In Craig's therapy session on page 14, he goes off on a rant about going to a museum and missing an extra-credit email. This would stop him from getting an A, which would stop him from getting into a "Good College", which would stop him from getting a "Good Job", which would mean he could hardly afford a shrink, which would render him depressed and useless, which would eventually make him homeless. These obstacles, which he calls his "Tentacles", definitely seem to weigh him down. Do you feel like you can relate to this? I know I get really stressed out sometimes because of this same problem.

I feel like this is one of the elements in the book that makes Craig such a relateable character. When reading this book, I feel like I can relate to Craig's problems. The pressure felt by teens nowadays is definitely a lot. We all have goals, and we have "tentacles" that get in the way. One of those most common goals is the same as Craig; getting into a good school, doing well, getting a good job, and not being poor and homeless. What makes the book so personable is the fact that his problems are not different from ours.
ReplyDeleteExactly! Like when he says, "I don't know how I can be so ambitious and so lazy at the same time". We're fighting the same battles, except he's clinically depressed. Personally, I think he's lazy because his Tentacles are suffocating him instead of merely getting in his way.
