When Humble and Craig talk on page 207, Humble relates their situation to George Orwell's Animal Farm, quoting the famous line "All animals are created equal, but some are more equal than others". He goes on to say that "Here in the real world, all equals are created animal, but some are more animal than others". What do you think this says about the different characters in the book? Who is the most animal? The least?
Personally, I'd say that Noelle is the least "animal" of the group, closely followed by Craig. In comparasin to the adults, most of the younger kids seem better off. This could be because the adults have struggled longer, letting their illness wear them down. The teens still stand a chance, which basically accounts for a more "equal" status.
ReplyDeleteI think Humble is the most animal. He knows how to adapt to this environment. He also knows how to run it. He takes care of those in his group and attacks others who he sees as a threat to him. And Craig and Noelle are the least, I agree.
ReplyDeleteI don't think Humble is the most animal. I mean, if he is, then that's saying something about the animal-ness of the rest of the floor. If we're looking at the extremity to which the others have been taken over by their problems, I'd go with Solomon. Or Muqtada. Or the anorexic girls. Humble's ability to seperate himself from the floor's problems and point out the way it parallels with a jungle separates him from the jungle itself.
